Top Stops: The Best of Our Southern California Road Trip
We made Newport Beach our starting point for this amazing journey. This charming beach town wasn’t just a cozy place to stay; it was also the perfect spot to kick off our adventures. Here’s what we explored from our Newport Beach home base:
Newport Beach
Before heading out, we spent time soaking up the vibe here. With its calm harbor, golden beaches, and plenty of family-friendly activities, it’s the ideal place to relax. The Balboa Fun Zone was a favorite with the kids, and renting bikes to cruise along the boardwalk was a highlight.
Laguna Beach (20min drive)
A short drive south brought us to this artistic seaside town. Known for its stunning coves and galleries, Laguna Beach was great for both relaxing and exploring. We walked along Heisler Park’s trails and admired the views of the Pacific. The kids loved splashing in the tide pools at Treasure Island Beach.
Palm Springs (1.5h drive)
Palm Springs was undoubtedly one of the absolute highlights of our Southern California trip. Located just 1.5 hours from Newport Beach, the drive itself set the tone for a fantastic day. Upon arrival, we were greeted with fabulous weather, which made it even more enjoyable to explore this stylish desert oasis. The town is packed with famous spots, and one of the first we encountered was the iconic Marilyn Monroe Statue. As we passed by on our way to other must-see attractions, it became clear that Palm Springs is a photographer’s dream. Every corner seemed photo-ready, from its retro streets and colorful murals to the sleek, mid-century modern buildings that the town is famous for.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without visiting the legendary Hotel California. This historic gem was a must-see for anyone who appreciates charm and a touch of Hollywood history. Although we had planned to hike the stunning Palm Canyon, we discovered, unfortunately, that the gate on S Palm Canyon Drive was closed. Nevertheless, we didn’t let that stop us from enjoying nearby desert trails. These paths were surrounded by towering palms and dramatic rock formations, offering plenty of opportunities to take in the area’s natural beauty. Overall, Palm Springs perfectly blends natural wonders, unique photo spots, and classic Hollywood glamour. It’s no surprise that it stands out as one of the best places to visit in Southern California!
San Diego
Let’s be honest – San Diego is huge, and one day is nowhere near enough to judge the whole city. So, we decided to skip the busy downtown and focus on two highlights that gave us a real taste of its charm. First, we headed to La Jolla, known for its stunning coastline and laid-back vibe. Watching the sea lions lounging on the beach was unforgettable! The coastal walk was a real treat, especially with the perfect weather we had. The crashing waves and dramatic cliffs made it feel like we were walking through a postcard. Later, we drove to the Coronado Peninsula for a completely different vibe. The views of the San Diego skyline from here were simply beautiful. It was the perfect spot to sit back, relax, and soak in the city’s charm without being in the middle of the hustle. San Diego gave us just a glimpse of its many sides, leaving us eager to return and explore more someday!
Old Town San Diego
Before heading back to Newport Beach, we made a stop at San Diego Old Town, and it turned out to be a fun little adventure. The kids loved the Western-style vibe and exploring the old buildings, imagining what life was like back then. The streets were lively, with colorful shops and historic landmarks giving us a glimpse of the past. It was relaxed and easy to walk around, making it a great way to end the day. Old Town San Diego was a nice stop that added a touch of history and fun before our drive back to Newport.
Where We Stayed for Our Southern California Day Trips
We stayed in an Airbnb for this trip, and honestly, we were a bit unsure at first. After our experience in Santa Monica and hearing about the high prices in LA, we weren’t expecting much. But luckily, we were completely blown away – it turned out to be an amazing spot! The location was perfect, right in one of the most beautiful areas we’ve ever seen. Every evening, we took peaceful walks to watch the sunset, and it seriously felt like a scene from a movie. Mornings were just as dreamy – having breakfast on the terrace surrounded by greenery was the best way to start the day. And let’s talk about the vegan burgers nearby. They were hands down the best we’ve ever had. We loved them so much, we went back multiple times! This Airbnb wasn’t just a place to crash – it became a huge part of what made our Southern California trip so special.
Eating Green: Plant-Based Spots You’ll Love
Let’s start with the star of the show: Nice Burger in Newport Beach. This fully vegan burger shop blew us away with their mouthwatering creations. To be honest, we ate there four out of six days – I think that says it all! Their burgers were so good, we couldn’t get enough. Whether it was the classic cheeseburger or one of their creative specials, every bite was pure perfection. If you’re in the area and love plant-based food, this place is an absolute must-try.
Roads, Rides, and Routes: Exploring SoCal
Driving in Southern California was as relaxing as we had hoped, and it truly felt like stepping into a movie scene. With wide-open lanes and scenic views, cruising the highways was an experience in itself. However, the Highway Patrol is always on the lookout, so sticking to the usual speed limit of 65–70 mph is important. While the drives are enjoyable, the long, straight stretches can become tiring, so staying alert is crucial.
Our Reliable Ride: Ford Expedition from Avis
We explored Southern California in a spacious and comfortable Ford Expedition from Avis, which was perfect for our family road trip. Starting our adventures from Newport Beach turned out to be a great decision. Since it’s located south of LA, we avoided the infamous LA traffic and enjoyed smoother daily drives.
Helpful Tips for Driving in SoCal
