Camera
First and foremost, a high-quality camera is a must for any photography enthusiast. Whether you prefer a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or even a high-end smartphone with excellent camera capabilities, choose the one that suits your style and needs.
Reflecting on our journey, we started years ago with a Nikon 3000 and some iPhone shots. Looking back at those images today, it leaves us feeling a bit nostalgic and regretful, as we were in places we may never return to, and we wish we had possessed a truly exceptional camera and lenses back then. Today, we are proud owners of the Sony Alpha 7III and regret not a single cent spent.
Lenses
When it comes to essential camera accessories, the choice of lens is crucial. Thus, it’s logical that this is one of our favorite topics. Lenses offer such a vast array of possibilities that we could practically write books about them. To keep it concise for now, we’ll spotlight our current lens lineup and share how we utilize them. These lenses are all part of our arsenal, ready for action:
Sony 200-600
Our cherished lens, although not suitable for daily use due to its weight. It truly shines in wildlife photography, sports events, and when photographing distant subjects.
Samyang 85
Perfect for capturing portraits and mesmerizing night shots in the city.
Tamron 17-28
Our first professional lens, and we never leave it behind. It’s our go-to for wide-angle shots, whether we’re indoors and aiming to capture an entire room or in the city, trying to frame an entire building in a single shot.
Sigma 35
A versatile lens that excels in street photography and can be used in a wide range of scenarios.
Tripod
Choosing the right tripod can be a topic deserving of its own comprehensive discussion, with numerous factors to consider. Years ago, we made the decision to invest in a Rollei Carbon Traveller tripod, and for our hobby use, it has proven to be sufficient and entirely satisfactory. However, your choice should align with your preferences and needs.
If you’re an avid hiker, then the weight of the tripod becomes a critical criterion. On the other hand, if you frequently shoot along the coastline where weather conditions can be harsh, stability is paramount. In our experience, Rollei tripods have consistently performed admirably. Many of our friends have also shared positive feedback about Sirui tripods, highlighting their durability and reliability.
Ultimately, your choice of tripod should cater to your specific photography style and the environments you frequently encounter during your adventures.
Camera Bag
At the beginning we don’t considered a camera bag as one of the must-have essential camera accessories, but safeguarding your camera gear is of utmost importance, and a well-padded, weather-resistant camera bag is the way to go. It’s worth noting that we’ve tried various options over the years. Initially, we started with a regular bag for our camera, but as our equipment collection expanded, we found ourselves in need of more space.
At that point, we switched to a National Geographic travel bag, which served us well. However, some features proved to be inconvenient, and the backpack lacked adequate back stabilizers, causing our lenses to shift inside the bag.
Recently, we’ve transitioned to a douchebag camera bag, and we couldn’t be happier. It boasts an ideal size, just large enough to accommodate the Sony 200-600mm lens. Additionally, there’s enough space for all our other lenses. The bag even includes a dedicated slot for an iPad or laptop.
What sets this bag apart is its exceptional stability and top-notch build quality. It’s been a fantastic choice for us, providing the security and convenience we need for our photography adventures.
Other Essential Camera Accessoires & Travel Gadgets
Filters
Neutral density (ND), polarizing, and graduated filters are essential tools for improving your photography. We really like using them because they can significantly enhance your photos. However, it can be a bit tricky to change them while we’re out shooting, especially when we’re with our two little ones. Still, using an ND filter, especially for capturing smooth water, has been a game changer for us. We use ND filters the most. While we don’t use the other filters as often, we also bought a filter system from NiSi that includes graduated filters. Unfortunately, we don’t get to use them as much as we’d like, mainly because we’re often short on time.
Lens Cleaning
Dust and smudges can ruin photos. We didn’t care at first and don’t considered this as one of essential camera accessories, but learned dirty lenses meant more editing. Now, a cleaning kit is vital. It keeps our lenses clear, saving editing time.
Memory Cards & Portable Hard Drive
Avoid the risk of losing your precious photos while traveling. Carry a portable hard drive or use cloud storage to regularly back up your images.
Have you ever been on vacation and suddenly run out of memory space? We might be a bit overcautious when it comes to potential data loss, but we’ve made it a habit to review the day’s photos with the family in the evening and immediately save them to a separate hard drive. We’ve tried various options over the years, and while there are many good ones out there, since we started using Samsung T7 drives, we haven’t had to worry about data storage anymore.
Remote Shutter Release
While not the top priority gadget, if you aim for long exposures, it’s a must-have. We began with a budget-friendly option from Rollei, priced at just €15 – not high-end, but perfect for beginners. These devices help capture long exposures and reduce tripod-induced camera shake, with some models supporting time-lapse photography as well.
