Best places in Algarve You Can’t Miss

With Vilamoura as our home base, exploring the best places in Algarve was totally doable as day trips. Each spot had its own unique charm and beauty, and with a bit of planning, we were able to see it all without having to switch hotels. Here’s a closer look at some of the most memorable locations we visited, each one showcasing why Algarve is a true gem of Portugal.

Benagil Cave

About a 35-minute drive from Vilamoura, Benagil Cave was high on our list. This sea cave, with its famous natural skylight, is simply stunning. We would have loved to take a kayak tour to get inside and capture some incredible angles, but with the kids being a bit young and the sea a little chilly in December, we decided to enjoy the views from above this time. If you go at sunrise, you’ll catch that magical light streaming through the cave opening – it’s one of those places that feels worth every second!

Ponta da Piedade

Just under an hour from Vilamoura, Ponta da Piedade near Lagos is a spot you could easily spend the whole day exploring. The golden cliffs and turquoise water create a surreal landscape that seems to change with every turn. We spent hours walking along the cliff paths, finding new viewpoints, and simply taking in the beauty. If you want to see it from a different perspective, you can take a boat tour to get up close to the arches and hidden coves.

Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha, about 40 minutes from Vilamoura, is absolutely worth the drive and has easily earned its reputation as one of the world’s top beaches. We visited on New Year’s Day and enjoyed a long, sunny walk along the cliffs with temperatures around 16°C – a real treat for January! The views from above are simply breathtaking, and several well-maintained wooden walkways along the coast make it easy to explore the cliffside trails. These paths offer a variety of scenic viewpoints, letting you discover new perspectives of this stunning coastline with every turn.

Tavira

A little further away at an hour’s drive from Vilamoura, Tavira is the perfect day trip if you’re looking to experience Algarve’s more traditional side. The town itself is charming, with cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and the historic Roman Bridge that crosses the Gilão River. From here, you can hop on a short ferry ride to Tavira Island, where the beach stretches for miles. It’s quiet, peaceful, and great if you’re looking to escape the busier spots.

Our Luxurious Stay: The Perfect Algarve Escape
Anantara Vilamoura

We chose to stay at the luxurious Anantara Vilamoura, just a 25-minute drive from Faro Airport, where we flew into for our Algarve getaway. From the moment we arrived, Anantara’s hospitality set the tone. They welcomed us with complimentary valet parking, which was a huge relief after a late flight, and the warm greeting felt like we were truly valued guests. Stepping into the expansive, impressive lobby, we knew we’d landed somewhere special, but it wasn’t until the morning light that we fully appreciated the beautiful oasis we’d arrived in.

What truly sets Anantara Vilamoura apart, though, is the staff. Having stayed in countless hotels, we can honestly say this team is one of our top 10. Every member went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. The dining experience was exceptional, with meals that delighted us every day, and the wellness spa was a dream – especially around New Year’s when the peaceful atmosphere felt like a true escape.

We were lucky with the weather, too, enjoying mostly sunny days with temperatures between 15 and 20°C. Some brave guests even took a dip in the pool during the day! Anantara Vilamoura truly made our New Year’s holiday feel like the perfect escape, combining luxury, warmth, and a touch of Algarve’s magic.

Best places in Algarve for Plant-Based Eats

While we often dined at our hotel, where the food quality was exceptional, we also explored a few great plant-based spots in the Algarve. It’s worth noting that fully vegan restaurants aren’t on every corner here, but there are vegetarian options to be found as well. Here are some standout places we discovered nearby:

Raízes Cozinha Saudável & Vegetariana (Quarteira)

A cozy spot offering a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Their menu highlights include a black bean and quinoa burger on garlic bolo do caco, tofu steak with chestnut cream, and spinach croquettes. Gluten-free and sugar-free options make this a great choice for health-conscious travelers.

Vegan Box (Faro)

With a daily vegan dish and Portuguese-inspired treats like custard tarts, Vegan Box is a top choice for plant-based travelers. Their friendly service and delicious meals make it a Faro favorite.

Outro Lado

Another notable spot, Outro Lado serves inventive plant-based dishes and is known for its vibrant, creative menu. Their dishes are fresh and flavorful, making it a great addition to any vegan itinerary.

Getting Around Algarve: Our Travel Tips

For this trip, we opted for a rental car from Sixt – a trusted choice that we’ve had great experiences with around the world, especially in terms of the car’s condition. Sixt provided a smooth pickup process, and, as always, the vehicle was in excellent shape. Having our own car made exploring Algarve’s beautiful beaches, cliffs, and towns incredibly easy and gave us the flexibility to discover both popular spots and hidden gems on our own schedule.

If you’re planning to drive in Algarve, there are a few helpful tips to keep in mind. Portugal has several toll roads, especially on main highways, so it’s good to be prepared. Some rental companies, like Sixt, offer an electronic toll pass that makes passing through tolls quick and hassle-free; otherwise, you can pay manually at certain toll booths. The main roads in Algarve are generally well-maintained, making it easy to travel between towns and attractions. However, some scenic routes or coastal paths can be narrower and winding, so taking your time to enjoy the views is always a good idea.

Parking can get crowded in busier areas, particularly during peak tourist season. Fortunately, many towns have designated parking areas, and most attractions offer parking, though some may charge a small fee. Driving etiquette in Portugal is quite relaxed, and the Portuguese are generally respectful drivers. In urban areas, the traffic may be a bit faster-paced, so it’s best to stay calm, observe speed limits, and keep an eye out for pedestrians in town areas.
