Batemans Bay was our final stop on our Aussie tour before heading to Sydney. Following the incredible experiences in Merimbula, this stretch of the New South Wales Sapphire coast didn’t disappoint either. From kangaroos on the beach, whale watching, the whitest beach on earth to captivating coastal vibes, Batemans Bay left us thoroughly enchanted.

Batemans Bay Bucket List: Must-See Attractions for Every Traveler
This coastal paradise on the Sapphire Coast offers an array of experiences that will leave a lasting impression on any traveler. Here’s our bucket list, filled with must-see attractions:
Pebbly Beach – Kangaroos on the Shore
One of the most unforgettable moments of our journey was at Pebbly Beach, where kangaroos roam freely along the sandy shores. It’s a sight our little ones will cherish forever. While enjoying this unique wildlife encounter, keep an eye out for some local residents – the region is known for its snake population.
Depot Beach – Secluded Serenity
Nearby Pebbly Beach, Depot Beach offers a quieter escape. Here, you’ll find kangaroos on the beach as well and a short rainforest walk from the parking area to the shore. It’s a tranquil oasis where nature takes center stage.
Whale Watching in Jervis Bay
We took an adventurous journey along the coastal line up to Jervis Bay, one of the prime destinations for whale watching. Numerous tour operators offer unforgettable encounters with these majestic creatures. Unfortunately, our luck didn’t favor us with whale sightings during our visit. Instead, we had the pleasure of encountering playful dolphins, which, while impressive, were not new to us as we’ve crossed paths with these delightful creatures numerous times before. However, we like to believe that everything unfolds for a reason, as our later whale-watching adventure in Hawaii turned out to be a truly rewarding experience.
Hyams Beach – The Whitest Sand on Earth
Hyams Beach, known for having the whitest sand on the planet according to the Guinness World Records, is indeed a breathtaking spot. However, if we’re completely honest, it didn’t make it into our top 5 favorite beaches. While it’s undeniably stunning, there’s something about the more secluded and untouched spots that captured our hearts.
Our Retreat: Where Comfort Meets Coastal Beauty
When it came to choosing our place of stay in Batemans Bay, we were fortunate to discover Bay Breeze Boutique Accommodation. Staying here for three days felt like hitting the jackpot. We had the entire house to ourselves, complete with a private garden – an experience that was nothing short of wonderful. In fact, we were left longing for more time to soak up the local atmosphere and enjoy the sheer comfort of our accommodation. What made our stay truly exceptional can be found in our detailed post about Bay Breeze Hotel.
Green Eats by the Coast: Plant-Based Food Options
As you may have gathered from our previous posts, we are avid nature and landscape enthusiasts. Our days are often filled with exploration and adventure, and we prefer not to spend hours sitting in restaurants, especially with our little ones in tow. This inclination often leads us towards self-catering options. Therefore, we regrettably can’t provide specific vegan dining recommendations for the region as we would have needed to conduct an extensive search.
Instead, we opted for a different approach during our stay in Batemans Bay. We stocked up on essentials at the local ALDI and Coles supermarkets and enjoyed the comfort of preparing our meals at home. Every moment spent outside our wonderful accommodation felt like time not fully cherished. Besides, we couldn’t resist trying out the grill on the rooftop terrace, adding a delightful touch to our evenings.
Navigating Batemans Bay: How we got Around
Getting around with our rental car was smooth and hassle-free. In fact, we couldn’t quite imagine exploring the region without it. If you’re planning to arrive by plane, Moruya Airport (Moruya-Batemans Bay Airport) is a smaller regional option primarily catering to domestic flights to and from Sydney and Melbourne. However, for a wider range of flight choices and connections, the larger international Canberra Airport is the preferred option.
Our arrival in Batemans Bay marked our second stop in South New South Wales during our Australian adventure. The roads in this region were in excellent condition, and we encountered no traffic jams along the way. It made for an incredibly relaxing driving experience as we made our way to our coastal haven. As our journey across Australia continued, we would soon find that parking fees would become a regular occurrence. However, in this region, parking remained largely free of charge, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of Batemans Bay without the worry of additional expenses.
